Fishing for our Hotel Guests
Our fishing grounds are exclusively available to our guests. The main river, the Ziller, is about 8 km long from Mayrhofen to Zell. For half its length, from Mayrhofen to Hippach, only fly fishers can fish there. The Gerlos, Sidan and Horberg streams are genuine mountain streams and thus difficult to fish in. In these fishing grounds as well as along the rest of the Ziller river, the use of other bait is allowed.
Water protection measures:
To keep up the quality of the fly fishing grounds, the bait must be barb-free.
- Only with one artificial fly (dry, wet, nymph) with fly rod and fishing line!
- Killing fish is absolutely prohibited. Caught fish must be put back carefully according to the "catch and release" principle!
The average size of trout and grayling is 30 - 45 cm.
Bigger specimen are caught repeatedly, spread out along the entire length of the Ziller. Due to the different food supply, trout in other fishing grounds are noticeably smaller.
In addition to the annual proscribed compulsory release of trout, graylings and grayling spawn have been released in the past few years. We are especially proud of the Ziller grayling!
Conditions for the lower part of the Ziller as well as mountain streams:
- Fish may be delivered to the hotel kitchen alive. Fish are used for personal requirements without exception (no charging for them, no giving them away is allowed).
- Minimum length for stream trout, rainbow trout, char 30 cm, grayling 45 cm.
- Natural bait, drilling bait and barbs are not welcome by the fishing supervisors.
Fish fairly!
Snow melt, high water:
As in all alpine rivers, there is an annual meting water period in the Ziller valley (April) as well as e in allen Alpenflüssen gibt es auch im Zillertal eine alljährliche Schmelzwasserperiode (April), sowie flood (mostly in July, August). In spring, most of the melting water is kept back in the reservoirs so that May and June are good fishing months. July and August are difficult months, however, because of the repeated high water. September and October again are good months for fishing, especially with dry flies.
